Hello World!

My name is Nicholas J. Ely, author of The Prisoner Manifesto

Forgive me for my website looking like it belongs in the stone ages. I'm developing this site from scratch, pen and paper at my desk from a prison cell, copy/pasting code via email and uploading to the internet. Give me a round of applause! LOL

“If I told you I was different,

Would you know the difference?”

Nicholas J. Ely was born August 31st, 1990 in Des Moines, IA. Raised in Sioux City, IA by divorced parents, he was 15 when he was locked up for the first time. Released at 17 years old, he lived in Omaha, NE where he graduated in 2008 from Northwest High School.

By April of 2009, Nicholas was arrested for a burglary charge. Serving two years in prison, six of the last eight months were spent in solitary confinement before he was released from Tecumseh with no parole, no money, no support.

42 days later, on July 12th 2011… Nicholas was arrested again, but this time for first degree murder. He was 20 years old when charged and prosecuted under the “felony murder” theory.

Before trial, Nicholas has asked the judge to relieve him of counsel because they weren’t assisting in his defense preparations, and he requested to represent himself. This request was denied and, without being made aware of the state’s evidence, he was forced into trial with unwanted counsel. Further, Nicholas was not allowed to testify on his own behalf in front of the jury.

Receiving a natural life sentence without parole after being found guilty of a murder he did not commit; Nicholas has been incarcerated ever since.

The early years of imprisonment were difficult. As of 2024, Nicholas has spent a total of 4 years in solitary confinement and 2 years in super-max “transitional” units.

Life was heavy, and after 9 years down he collapsed to his knees and cried for the first time. Genuinely pleading to the universe, he begged for relief from the darkness- from the suffering, from the oppression, from the nihilism- and the universe spoke back.

From the center of his pain, Nicholas found purpose. He found reason. He finally found a light…

… and the weight from his soul was lifted.

Rising to his feet a new man, Nicholas founded the More Than An Inmate organization. His life’s mission became to educate others and provide a voice to prisoners. Each day he sets out to inspire inmates to overcome their conditions of oppression and bring awareness to the injustices within the American incarceration system.

Nicholas has dreams of one day being released again to be reunited with his family and loved ones in Washington, but right now his reality is spending 21 hours a day in a cell by himself… reading, writing, exercising, AND PLANNING his next best move in the fight against the incarceration system.
